The predecessor of Facebook was called face mash which was created in 2003 as a "hot or not" game for Harvard students. The website was started in controversy when Zuckerburg was accused of stealing the idea from his fellow students. When the website was first launched it was only for college students who were looking to meet other students who were going to the same college as them. It started to gain a lot of interest its first two years and spread through most of Canada and the United States universities. In 2005 it launched a high school version and it started to become popular among businesses. By 2006 the site expanded to everyone 13 years or older with a valid email address. Facebook started to add more and more to its site, by 2008-2009 Facebook started adding online games for users to play. In 2010 Facebook launched its mobile app and by 2011 33% of its traffic was on the mobile app. Also in 2011 Facebook became the largest online photo host. Every year it Facebook continued to grow by the hundreds of millions. By December 31st 2013, Facebook had over 1.2 billion people registered with the site.

Although a new study has shown that Facebook can actually make us sad. It creates an alienation that people feel when they use it. Facebook shows every picture or post from every friend you have on your timeline. Since the person using Facebook is usually on a computer alone, the person sees their facbook friends together and having a good time and they start to feel sad. Also Facebook has been drawn to online bullying. With all the different ways people are able to communicate it makes it very easy for someone to sit behind the computer and bully people.
